Fontwell Races

{racingfixtures|fontwell}
There is nothing quite like the thrill and thunder of the world’s greatest horse races, such as those of Cheltenham or Aintree, but for most racegoers it is the smaller courses around the country which hold a special charm and appeal.

Fontwell Races, inside rail Cheaper to attend certainly, racegoers can also get a close up view of all the action as it happens and enjoy the friendly atmosphere of the day with some first class hospitality too. Fontwell Park in West Sussex is the epitome of a charming and friendly local course and is consistently voted the best small course in the South East. Fontwell Races are well supported and attended by avid race fans as well as families and groups looking for a memorable day or evening out.

Fontwell races have been staged since 1924 and since that time the course has seen many improvements and redevelopments, the latest being a 6.5 million program in new hospitality provision. A popular venue for the National Hunt season there is racing all year round at Fontwell races with the exception of July, offering plenty of raceday opportunities whatever the season.

There are two tracks at the course; an unusual figure of eight track for steeplechase events and a right hand oval for hurdles.

The undoubted highlight of Fontwell races is the National Spirit Hurdle which is scheduled for February each year. A contest for four year olds and over the race is run over a distance of one mile and four furlongs. A Grade II event it provides a good trial for the subsequent Cheltenham meeting in March.

Baracouda has enjoyed success at both as has My Way de Solzen who is the only horse to have triumphed in at both Fontwell and Cheltenham in the same season.

The other event most appreciated and attended by the knowledgeable race crowd is the Southern National Meeting in November, which features the Tikram Handicap Hurdle. Other Fontwell races to attend throughout the year are comprised of a series of popular themed events such as evening fixtures followed by live music and entertainment and Family Race Days with an abundance of children’s entertainment and activities.

Fontwell Park is the perfect venue for families whether on day trips in the area or as part of a family holiday in West Sussex. Children get in for free too if under the age of 16 and accompanied by an adult.
